![]() It's like graffiti over a vital road sign, but really boring graffiti about aqueducts and olive groves. Even placing a structure can be utmost misery, abysmally-designed build menus spilling across almost half the screen, and sometimes requiring millimetre increment-shifting of the camera to try and find a suitable spot not obscured by swathes of nasty giant text. The trouble is keeping a handle on all ever-growing depth, and that's where the archaic interface violently strips Caesar IV of any claims to greatness it might otherwise have legitimately made. It's hugely satisfying to watch your new city start to emerge, to see the flow of people to resource to money to people and round and round and round working properly. But depth is why we're here, right? In theory, such micromanagement is pleasing, and certainly this is true of the early stages of a given scenario. Almost any given building is dependent on at least three other buildings before it's even vaguely effective, and in turn each of those buildings' employees/residents rely on a baker's dozen of balms for mind, body and soul to keep them happy. You can't see the plague, poverty and sexual deviancy from all the way up here.Īll pretty reasonable, but complicated stuff - there's a hell of a lot to manage simultaneously. No matter how many caged lions you desperately gift to Caesar in tribute (his use for the poor, angry beasts isn't specified, and is perhaps best left a mystery), if your new arm of the Empire is consistently losing money, he'll send the lads around to sort you out. If a nightmarishly illogical road layout or a Malaria-induced worker shortage is delaying the passage between produce and cash, the economy will grow more slowly, your citizens will whine and up sticks, and you'll lose favour with Rome. There's certainly a decent sense of life to a large city, wheelcart-toting Plebs (and the occasional confused escapee from the sheep pen) haring along intricate road systems to collect, process, sell and export multifarious goods like so many poorly-washed ants. Cities bustle, water shimmers, light diffuses - good work, job done. Folk with a silly-money graphics card may gently lament that Caesar won't quite squeeze every last drop of pixel juice from their system, but it's plenty pretty. Everything necessary - that is, everything from Caesar III and then some - lurks within, but it's not always presented in suitably 2006, rather than 1998, fashion. A sign that though an awful lot of work has gone into making the mechanics of Caesar IV as exact as possible, perhaps less consideration has gone into what it feels like to be a player of this city management sequel, released eight years on from its last, and hugely popular, iteration. Why bother you with something that a) will probably bewilder and alarm you and b) you clearly don't even need to know about anyway? Justice Department (DOJ) had embarked on an intrusive investigation into claims of unfair business practices as alleged by Microsoft’s competitors. Its launch, scheduled for August 1995, would prove to be the largest, most expensive consumer marketing endeavor in history. Early in 1995, Microsoft was particularly occupied with finalizing Windows 95. Netscape’s meteoric rise could not escape the attention of the world’s dominant software company. ![]() What’s more: the company’s spectacular IPO was drawing near and was to start the dot-com boom. Netscape was on its way to an extraordinary 90% market share amongst internet browsers. Users did not need to stare at a blank screen until their dial-up connections loaded text and graphics.Įven more astounding was the fact that the upstart Netscape Communications, Netscape Navigator’s creator, had been co-founded by a 23-year-old programmer just a few months previously and seemed well-positioned to take advantage of the imminent consumer internet revolution. In addition, Netscape could render web pages on the fly while they were still being downloaded. Early web buffs eager to discover the marvel of the nascent internet were no longer restricted to downloading text alone. Unlike primitive browsers, Netscape could display text and graphics on websites. “The Browser Wars”: Rise and Fall of NetscapeĪt the start of 1995, a new software called Netscape Navigator took the computing world by storm. Up until the dot-com bust, Microsoft not only out-competed Borland, Lotus Development, Corel, and other rivals that were previously in the lead, but also crushed upstarts such as Netscape. History provides but a few vivid portraits of intense competition that compare to the mid-90s’ “ browser wars,” a narrative characterized by the dogged determination and intense competitive spirit of some of the world’s greatest entrepreneurs.īill Gates and Microsoft are legendary for using brute power: whenever a new competitor emerged, Microsoft would muster its financial resources and its smarts to storm into those markets with alternative products that would eventually dominate. Besides, collaborative or naturally uncompetitive individuals tend to find competitive people somewhat unpleasant. Of course, competition is healthy but, winning may come at a hefty price-always striving to win or being overzealous can be both unnecessary and unproductive. The archetypical successful person is determined, aggressive, and obsessed with winning at everything, sometimes at any cost. We live in a hypercompetitive age where winning is the outcome, often necessary for survival-in classrooms, sports, trade and commerce or at work. The innovations here might make this more than a backup browser.Competition Drives so much of our World Today IE mode, integrated AOL IM, RSS reader, form filler, and security suite are gone, but the compatibility with Firefox 2 extensions and LinkPad more than make up for the loss. Netscape Friends' Activity shows you what your friends have been doing, Netscape Tracker tracks the latest site updates, and Netscape News tracks only news posts. Already-posted articles show Vote and Discuss icons instead of Share.īookmarks and History are self-explanatory sidebars, but a series of -related ones work well, too. The content becomes a summary, in a box that just needs a few tags to be submitted to the collective. Highlight content from the page and hit Share. The Share button inside the address bar connects you directly to. is a huge part of the new Navigator: some new features might not be of interest if you don't hang out there. The new Netscape Navigator takes a Firefox foundation, some neat Sidebar innovations, and an inside track to the social-networking and news site to create a browser that has some great features with minimal wonkiness. ![]() “I would love to see this energy and momentum and interest and participation be channeled into a positive way. “I think there’s a message there and I think we should pay attention to it,” she said, adding that she hopes the dissidents stay involved. But she said leadership should listen to the concerns raised by the opponents. Karen Falkner, a set painter and a trustee of Local 729, said she voted for the contract. They run it like a real business, not like a circus where they’re trying to pound it out as fast as they can.” “It’s going to be members saying, ‘No, I am going to stop and get lunch at six hours.’… There’s productions that do 10-hour days and they’re done. ![]() “We’re going to do an immediate, dramatic change across the film industry,” he said. Cory Boldroff, another member of Local 80, said that members are already primed to advocate for more humane schedules. ![]() In a tight labor market, some productions could find themselves having to compete for workers. It’s hard sometimes and you don’t want to be the shit stirrer, but you have to be now.” “You have to advocate for yourself and the people you work with. Some say the next step should be a culture change that goes production by production. It also raises wages for the lowest paid workers in the union, including writers assistants and script coordinators.īut opponents argued that it did not do anything to shorten workdays that can run 14 hours or longer, which was their main issue. The deal provides a 54-hour weekend rest period as well as increased penalties for going longer than eight hours without a lunch break. The contract includes some gains for workers - and no givebacks - making its near defeat all the more striking. “It’s like being patted on the head and told, ‘Don’t worry about it.'” “It’s frustrating how it’s like pulling teeth to get information,” said Brandy Tannahill, a grip in Local 80 who helped organize opposition to the contract. That has bred some mistrust of the outcome. Instead, the local unions have provided their own totals - in an inconsistent fashion - just to their own members. The international union has not released a breakdown of the delegate vote, even to its own members. In the “popular vote,” the ASA membership supported the contract 52% to 48%, but the Basic Agreement members voted against it by a tally of 50.4% to 49.6%. The Area Standards Agreement was ratified thanks to a four-vote margin in New Mexico, while the Basic Agreement was approved with just 270 votes to spare at the MPEG. The Basic Agreement was ratified by a vote of delegates from 13 local unions based in Los Angeles, while the companion Area Standards Agreement was ratified by delegates from another 23 locals around the country. Some are also pushing for an audit of the vote or a change in the delegate voting procedure, which allowed the Basic Agreement to be ratified even though most members voted no. Loeb and Davis did not respond to requests for interviews. It’s inevitable that new leadership is going to happen.” “There was already discontent in Local 80 before this contract. “I think that’s where this has to go,” said Colin Angle, a member of the local. There is already talk within the local of trying to unseat Thom Davis, an ally of Loeb’s who has served as business representative since 1998. IATSE Local 80, which represents grips, voted against ratification by a 2-to-1 margin. So some are focusing instead on elections for local officers, many of which are set for next spring. “I have never seen him at an IATSE town hall.”īut Loeb, who has served as president for 13 years, was just re-elected without opposition at the union’s convention in July. “He is out of touch with the membership,” said Amy Duddleston, editor of “Mare of Easttown” and a board member of the Motion Picture Editors Guild. Loeb is based in New York, and many in Los Angeles say he did not grasp the members’ hunger for more wholesale change in production schedules. Many have directed their anger at Matthew Loeb, IATSE’s international president. The following year Robinson introduced Keys to her future A&R at Arista Records, Peter Edge, who later described his first impressions to HitQuarters: "I had never met a young R&B artist with that level of musicianship. Honestly, this is the best option anyway because it will optimize your specific engine rather than offer a blanket solution for every 1.8T with these upgrades. Now, you’ll need to go to a pro-tuner and have them remap your ECU. APR Stage 1 software is still available, but it isn’t designed to work with the bigger turbo. Existing APR customers can still go with the K04 software tune upgrade we offer, but that doesn’t help you if you don’t already have APR software, to begin with. ![]() The APR Stage 2+ software was the go-to upgrade for years, but those are no longer available. There used to be off-the-shelf solutions for the basic upgrades mentioned so far on the list, but with recent EPA crackdowns, many have been pulled. You should do the intake, downpipe, K04 turbo, and software upgrade at the same time. Now, it doesn’t necessarily require a software tune, but to make the most of the K04 turbocharger upgrade for your MK4 GTI 1.8T, you’ll want to upgrade your software as well. We’ve put together a comprehensive K04 Turbocharger installation kit for your MK4 GTI to help you out. If you’re going to go for as much as you can with bolt-on upgrades, we’d consider this a necessity. The bigger K04 turbocharger offers more air delivery and supports a higher horsepower ceiling. It becomes a serious restriction point if you need something to support more than about 215hp, as that’s all it can handle. The factory K03 turbocharger is anything but impressive. An intake, downpipe, and catalytic converter upgrade are necessary to make the next two improvements on our list. Something like the CTS Turbo 3” high-flow downpipe and catalytic converter will help you reach your goals. Again, you’ll notice some improvement to sound and performance after the installation, but it’s just a piece of the puzzle in terms of overall potential. Upgrading your downpipe and exhaust with a higher-flowing, better performing, and less restrictive system is going to allow you to have room to grow. The idea is to have a plan and know the steps to reach that goal. DownpipeĪgain, one single upgrade isn’t going to turn your MK4 GTI into a different car. If you just want to make one or two upgrades, you’re better off with coilovers and wheels. ![]() If you follow everything on the rest of this list, an intake is a must. Our Luft-Technik intake system for your MK4 GTI does add some power out of the box, but the majority of an upgraded intake’s benefits happen when you pair it with other upgrades. Think of it as future-proofing your engine. However, if you have plans to make your 1.8T into a respectable power source, then you’ll need an upgraded intake. If you’re just looking to spend money, then you could arguably get more bang for your buck making your MK4 GTI perfect rather than just dumping money at a single upgrade. It’s an age-old question and one we’ve previously answered: should I spend money on a cold air intake? The answer, in short, is yes, but there is a caveat. Everyone knows bolt-on upgrades paired with a software tune are the fastest ways to add power, but what are enthusiasts running in their cars? Where should new enthusiasts spend their money to get the most enjoyment possible out of their MK4 GTI? Today, we’re looking specifically at upgrades we think every MK4 GTI 1.8T owner should have. Thanks to its availability, affordability, and the aftermarket support offered for this engine, it’s more of a question of where to start rather than what to do. The Volkswagen MK4 GTI with the 1.8T engine is one of the most commonly modified platforms available. ![]() This game is completely free from all the cost but there are some in-app purchases available which you can buy with real money.
